COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Drew DeRidder stopped all 26 shots thrown his way and added a trio of saves in the shootout to help North Dakota capture two points in the NCHC standings with a 1-0 win in the shootout on Saturday night from Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
With the official score ending at 0-0, the game finishes as the third scoreless tie in program history, with the last coming on Oct. 19, 2007 at Boston College when the game was called after two periods due to fog.
Tyler Kleven sealed the shootout victory for the Fighting Hawks (14-13-6, 8-10-4 NCHC) with a rocket past Colorado College (10-19-3, 6-13-3 NCHC) in the third round of the shootout to keep the visitors in sixth place of the league standings with two games remaining.
DeRidder was sparkling in net for his fourth shutout of the season and eighth of his career to help North Dakota extend its unbeaten streak to four game, matching the season long.
Similar to last night, North Dakota had to weather an early CC attack but DeRidder and his defense were up to the task through the opening 10 minutes of the first, as the Fenton, Mich., native helped kill off an early penalty on the visitors to keep the game scoreless.
Following the halfway point of the opening stanza, UND started to take control and held the Tigers without a shot attempt for the final 12:06 of the period to finish with a 7-6 shot advantage but the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes.
Both teams had chances in the middle frame on the man advantage, but neither side could beat the goaltenders as the game moved to the third period still locked at 0-0.
Just like the previous two periods, the goaltenders proved to the storyline in the third and the contest headed to overtime for the fourth straight time for North Dakota.
In the extra session, both teams created havoc in the crease, but the goaltenders stopped all seven shots fired their way to close out the 0-0 tie and force the shootout.
North Dakota returns home to host Omaha in the final series at Ralph Engelstad Arena of the season beginning on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. from Grand Forks.
