ORLANDO, Fla. – The North Dakota Softball team headed to the Sunshine State to open their weekend slate with an early game against Penn and followed by an afternoon game with Kennesaw State (Ga.). UND got their second win of the season as they downed Penn in a high scoring affair 12-9. Makaela Carr (2-3) picked up the win while Rachel Riley (0-5) took the loss. In game two KSU topped UND 8-0, with Laura Bishop (1-2) getting the win and Camryn Lasota (0-8) taking the loss.
In game one, UND opened up a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Starter Jackie Albrecht got out of a jam in the top of the first with a based loaded double play to keep the game scoreless. Madi Moore opened the bottom of the first with a walk and then Izzy Haslett was hit by a pitch. Cassie Castaneda followed and doubled to left, bringing both runners in. Two batters later Mariah Peters launched one to center field to make it 4-0. Logan Gronberg followed with a double and later advanced to third on a passed ball before coming in on an RBI single from Katie Joten to make it 5-0.
Penn struck for six runs in the top of the third and added another in the top of the fifth to make it 7-5, but in the bottom of the sixth inning UND answered with the first three runners getting on base with two singles and a walk. Moore came to the plate and reached on a fielder's choice, as two runs came in to score and tied the game at seven. It was the start of a seven run frame for UND.
Haslett followed with a single to right which brought two more runs in, and later Madison Pederson did what she does best—hit balls a long way. The three run shot made it 12-7.
In the top of the seventh, Penn got two back but Carr closed out the game for the UND win.

In game two, the Fighting Hawks struggled to get the bats going against KSU. Down 1-0 in the top of the second, three singles in the first four batters loaded the bases with one out. But the Fighting Hawks were unable to bring a run in from there. KSU then struck for six in the bottom of the second and then got one more in the bottom of the fifth to close the game.
