CHENEY, Wash. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team bounced back from a two-match losing streak with a 5-2 win over Eastern Washington from Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney, Wash. to conclude a trio of matches on the week.
UND (15-4) took the early lead with a pair of dominating performances in doubles action on the top-two courts. The No. 1 duo of
Gerhard Sullwald and
Nikita Snezhko opened it up with a 6-2 triumph before
Cian McDonnell and
Edmond Aynedjian closed out the 1-0 lead by a 6-3 score from the second spot.
Aynedjian kept it rolling in singles action, notching a pair of 6-2 wins to increase the lead to 2-0 at the No. 3 spot before Eastern Washington got on the board from the fourth position to trim the advantage to 2-1.
That was as close as the Eagles would get, with McDonnell grabbing a 6-2, 6-4 victory on the No. 2 court to push the match into a clinching position and Sullwald sealing the match win with a 6-2, 7-6 triumph at the top spot.
Riley Odell capped off his perfect week at the No. 5 court in singles play, rallying from a first set defeat to post 7-6, 10-8 victories over the final two frames to close out the 5-2 triumph for the Fighting Hawks.
North Dakota heads back into conference play next Friday at Omaha.
