Fighting Hawks Fall in Single Sunday Game to South Dakota 9-1

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Being scheduled to play in four cities over a weekend sounds like something that would happen on a Rolling Stones tour, but ultimately was the fate of the North Dakota softball team this weekend. After being scheduled to play in Vermillion originally, then planned to play in Yankton, then playing the first game of the series in Omaha, the Fighting Hawks wrapped up the weekend in Sioux City as they took on South Dakota; falling 9-1 to the Coyotes.

USD got on the board first with three runs in the second. In the top of the fifth, the Hawks broke through as Angie Dumlao scored from third as Madison Pederson reached on an error by the catcher on a dropped third strike. But from there it was all USD as they scored six unanswered to close the game. Clara Edwards got the win for USD while Jackie Albrecht started the second game in a row and took the loss.

Key Points

·         Both Cassie Castaneda and Katie Joten had two hits in the game—Castaneda also walked.
