Ulseth Enters Top-10 Nationally, Labatte Shatters Program Record

AZUSA, Calif./LONG BEACH, Calif. – North Dakota resumed action at the Bryan Clay Invitational and UND throwers opened competition at the Beach Invitational on Friday. Elise Ulseth and Luke Labatte were two highlights in Azusa, with Ulseth entering the top-10 nationally in the heptathlon and Labatte shattering the 5,000-meter school record.

Ulseth made headlines on Friday, finishing as the runner-up in section one of the heptathlon at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a total of 5,676 points. That point total not only allowed her to finish as the runner-up, but also currently ranks No. 6 nationally. It was also 10 points shy of breaking Ulseth's school record in the heptathlon.

The Norwegian native entered the day in sixth place with 3,244 points and went to work right away, scoring her first 877 points of the day in the long jump with the third-best jump of section one with a leap of 19-11 3/4 (6.09m). In the following event, Ulseth put down the third-best throw in the javelin with a mark of 141-10 (43.23m) and moved into second in the standings with 4,983 points. She concluded the heptathlon in the 800 meters with the eighth-fastest time of the section with a time of 2:19.81.

Labatte shattered the school record in the 5,000 meters with a personal-best time of 14:17.47. His time was the fourth-best time of heat two and broke the program record by over 10 seconds. The previous record was 14:30.18, set by Nate Peterson at the Mt. SAC Relays in 2016.

Earlier in the day, Jesse Middendorf shined in the Invitational 800 meters and posted the second-fastest time in program history with a personal-best time of 1:50.88. He was less than a second from breaking the school record.

In the open section of the 800 meters, Alec Nelson tied for No. 3 on the UND top-10 list with a PR of 1:51.21 to place fourth.

Back in the heptathlon, Malene Kollberg finished fifth in section three with 4,957 points. That point total now ranks No. 4 in school history. Kollberg's best event of the afternoon was the long jump, where she put down the sixth-best leap of the group with a mark of 18-6 (5.64m).

Elle Thorson also competed in section three of the heptathlon and took 15th with 4,659 points. Her best event of the day was the javelin, where she added 518 points to her total with a throw of 105-6 (32.17m).

Maguire Petersen was in section three of the decathlon and made it through eight of the events before bowing out of the competition. He finished with 4,983 points and his top event of the day was the pole vault, where he tied for seventh with a height of 12-9 1/2 (3.90m).

At the Beach Invitational, Natalie Mohring had the best throw for the UND throwers and finished with a toss of 181-5 (55.30m) in the hammer throw.
