FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota softball team continued their season Saturday as they played a pair of "home" games at the campus of North Dakota State against St. Thomas. The Hawks won game one 18-13 and then dropped game two 13-7. In game one, Makaela Carr picked up the win to advance to 6-7 on the season while Ella Cook took the loss. In game two, Isabella True got the win while Carr took the loss.
Game one started really quickly as UST got two in the top of the first, but UND answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Cassie Castaneda to score Madi Moore, followed by an RBI double from Madison Pederson to tie it at two. Later Baylee Howley doubled up the middle to score two more runs and then Lauren Brown scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2. In the bottom of the second Castaneda doubled to bring Moore in again and then Pederson launched a homer to left to make it 8-2.
UST scored twice in the top of the third but back to back RBI singles from Katie Joten and Castaneda made it 10-4 and then Mariah Peters doubled to right center to make it 12-4. A seven run top of the fourth pulled UST back within one at 12-11. But UND answered with six straight runs in the next two innings to make it 18-11. Joten brought in Angie Dumlao and then Castaneda hit a sac fly, a based loaded walk from Izzy Haslett and then Brown reached on a fielder's choice to score Pederson before Joten hit a two run shot in the fifth.
In game two, UST took a 1-0 lead in the first and then a two RBI double from Pederson and an RBI single from Haslett gave UND back the lead at 3-1. UST got one more in the top of the second and then Pederson followed with a two RBI double in the bottom of the frame to make it 5-2, part of a five RBI game for her. UST got another run in the top of the third but UND answered with a Moore sac fly. Over the fourth and fifth innings UST scored five unanswered runs before Pederson came up with another RBI double to make it 8-7. But UST got the last five runs to make it 13-7, which is how the game ended.
