Hawks Comeback Falls Short, Fall 3-2 to Friars

ABILENE, Texas – The North Dakota volleyball team closed out their weekend in Texas with a showdown against Providence, rallying from an 0-2 hole after two sets to force a fifth set but fell short as they dropped the fifth set to lose the match 3-2 (22-25, 20-25, 25-21, 28-26, 7-15).

Paige Barber set a new career high with 13 kills, tying with Kaycee O'Dell to lead the UND attack, while Teagan Timperley notched her first career double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs.

After the teams split the first four points of the first set, Providence went on a quick 3-0 run and would keep UND at bay the rest of the set. The Hawks would get within one, but were unable to tie or take the lead in the set as the Friars went up 1-0.

The two teams alternated points to start the second set, with UND leading 5-4 early on. But Providence went on a 4-0 run to take the lead 8-5. Later in the set a 3-0 run for UND, capped off with an ace from Maddy Hornyak, brought the Hawks within one at 18-17. Providence took the next four points, then UND the next three, and Providence the last three to end the set.

Providence started the third set with an 8-1 run, but UND would fight back. A block from O'Dell and Barber would start a 7-2 run that brought UND within two at 10-8. Later back-to-back aces from Elizabeth Norris tied the set at 11, the middle of the set would be tight. UND led 22-20 late, and kills from O'Dell and Marissa Stockman helped UND close out the set.

In the fourth set UND found themselves down 12-5, but chipped away to eventually tie the set at 20. Later with the set tied at 23, a kill from Timperley gave UND set point. Providence fought it off to tie at 24. A service error gave UND a set point, but Providence fought it off and got another point to go to match point. But UND closed out the set with three straight points to force a fifth set.

Early on in the fifth set the Hawks led 3-2, but an 8-1 run by Providence put them ahead for good.
