North Dakota Competes in Two Meets, Wins 12 Individual Crowns

BROOKINGS, S.D./MOORHEAD, Minn. – North Dakota competed in a pair of meets on Saturday and came away with 12 event wins and posted nine improvements to the UND top-10 lists.

At the Jim Emmerich Invitational in Brookings, North Dakota swept the mile titles. Yonca Kutluk won the women's crown with a time of 4:49.82, which moved her up to No. 2 on the UND top-10 list and was less than one second shy of breaking the school record. Luke Labatte was victorious in the men's mile and got the gold in 4:09.54.

On top of the mile titles, the UND distance squad also rewrote the top-10 lists. On the men's side, Alec Nelson placed fourth in a time of 4:11.06, which moved him up to No. 3 in the record book. He was trailed by Jamie Burns, who placed sixth in 4:12.06 for the No. 8 time in school history. Henrik Lindstrot posted the No. 9 time on the list with a PR of 4:13.68, while his twin brother Lennart Lindstrot recorded the No. 10 time in program history with a time of 4:14.66.

Eliana Malnourie also ran with Kutluk in the women's mile and took sixth in a personal-best time of 4:56.91, moving her up to No. 7 in the event in program history. Jadyn Keeler clocked a PR of 4:59.44 and just missed the UND top-10 list after Kutluk's and Malnourie's improvements, but her time would have made the top-10 list earlier in the day.

Brooklyn Brouse placed sixth in the 400 meters at South Dakota State with a time of 57.75. Her time moved her into the UND top-10 list with the No. 9 time in school history.

Kenna Curry earned the weight throw title in Brookings with a PR toss of 67-6 (20.57m), which improved her No. 3 mark on the UND top-10 list. Eve Goldstein and Julia Matthews also placed in the weight throw and were seventh (56-5 1/4, 17.20m) and eighth (54-6, 16.61m), respectively. The mark for Matthews was a personal-best.

Later in the meet, Goldstein won the shot put crown with a PR mark of 47-8 1/2 (14.54m), which moved her up to No. 4 on the UND top-10 list. Curry was the runner-up with a throw of 47-2 1/4 (14.38m) and Matthews posted a personal-best toss of 43-3 (13.18m) to take fifth.

Tiffanie Magnusson was the first UND student-athlete to win a title at Concordia College, winning the long jump crown with a leap of 19-3 1/2 (5.88m). One hour later, she took part in the high jump and claimed the gold medal in that event with a clearance of 5-3 (1.60m).

Maguire Petersen won the men's long jump with a mark of 22-1 1/2 (6.74m).

Hinewai Knowles earned the first title on the track for UND in Moorhead, getting the win in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.27.

The Fighting Hawks swept both the 200-meter and 400-meter titles at the Cobber Open. Jerzie Finstad claimed both titles on the women's side, winning the 200 meters in 25.65 and claiming the 400-meter crown with a time of 57.42. On the men's side, Wyatt Mutzenberger earned the 200-meter title (23.31), while P.K. Moore was victorious in the 400 meters (53.35).

Katelyn Vesledahl, competing unattached, also earned an event title and won the weight throw with a toss of 45-11 1/4 (14.00m).

North Dakota will host the UND Open inside the Pollard Athletic Center on Friday and Saturday. The opening events of the pentathlon and heptathlon will commence the meet at 3 p.m. on Friday, while the men's and women's discus will also take place on Friday evening at 6 p.m.

POST-MEET NOTES
* Yonca Kutluk (mile), Luke Labatte (mile), Kenna Curry (weight throw) and Eve Goldstein (shot put) all won titles at the Jim Emmerich Invitational in Brookings.
* Tiffanie Magnusson (long jump, high jump), Maguire Petersen (long jump), Hinewai Knowles (60-meter hurdles), Jerzie Finstad (200 meters, 400 meters), Wyatt Mutzenberger (200 meters) and P.K. Moore (400 meters) each claimed individual crowns at the Cobber Open in Moorhead. Katelyn Vesledahl, competing unattached, was also victorious in the weight throw.
* All nine of the improvements made to the UND top-10 lists came at the Jim Emmerich Invitational.
* Red Wilson, a recent addition from the UND football team, ran in the 60 meters at the Cobber Open and was the runner-up with a time of 7.15. He was just edged out by Dawson Schaffer of Concordia-Moorhead (7.14) for the title.
