SEATTLE, Wash./GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The North Dakota distance team shattered the 3,000-meter school record at the UW Invitational and the Fighting Hawks won two event titles on the first day of the UND Open on Friday.
In the women's 3,000 meters in Seattle,
Yonca Kutluk placed fifth and shattered the school record with a personal-best time of 9:22.35. She broke the record of teammate
Jadyn Keeler, who set it approximately 20 minutes earlier.
Keeler now holds the No. 2 time in program history in the 3,000 meters, but at the time she competed, she set a new school record with a PR time of 9:40.61. At the time, she broke the record of Madison Overby, who set it at 9:42.75 in Brookings during the 2019 season.
In the men's 3,000 meters,
Jamie Burns ran the second-fastest time in school history with a time of 8:17.67. It was his first time competing in the 3,000 meters at UND.
Back in Grand Forks inside the Pollard Athletic Center,
Tiffanie Magnusson won the pentathlon title with 3,793 points. Her top event was the long jump, where she had the top mark of the evening and picked up a day-high 807 points with a leap of 19-2 3/4 (5.86m). She also had the top mark in the high jump with a PR clearance of 5-4 (1.63m). She clocked a personal-best time of 2:26.24 in the 800 meters and took second in the final event, which was enough to hold off a surging
Malene Kollberg.
Kollberg was the runner-up in the pentathlon with 3,785 points. She made a push for the top spot in the pentathlon in the 800 meters, where she put down a PR time of 2:23.16 and beat the rest of the field by over three seconds but it was not enough to claim to pentathlon crown. Kollberg also had the top time in the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles to begin the day with a time of 8.91 and recorded a personal-best shot put mark of 35-8 (10.87m).
Eucabeth Kivikangas took third in the pentathlon with 3,521 points. She had the best shot put toss of the day with a throw of 42-3 1/2 (12.89m). Kivikangas ended the day with PR's in the 60-meter hurdles (9.40), 800 meters (2:31.86) and tied her personal-best in the high jump with a height of 4-11 1/2 (1.51m).
Elle Thorson placed fourth in the pentathlon with 3,149 points. Her top finish came in the high jump, where she tied for fourth with a clearance of 5-3 (1.60m).
Jenna Koppelsloen and
Finley Davignon wrapped up the scoring for UND in the pentathlon and were fifth (2,912 points) and seventh (2,742 points), respectively. Koppelsloen finished with PR's in the shot put (32-4 1/4, 9.86m), long jump (16-8, 5.08m) and 800 meters (2:35.80), while Davignon ended the day with new personal-bests in the 60-meter hurdles (10.59) and long jump (16-3 1/4, 4.96m).
In the women's discus,
Kenna Curry claimed the crown with a toss of 148-4 (45.22m).
Eve Goldstein placed third with a throw of 137-2 (41.82m), while
Kaylynn Red Tomahawk finished eighth with a distance of 118-9 (36.20m).
