Olivia Edlund recorded a career-high seven kills and attacked at a clip of .375 in her first career start, North Dakota rallied in set one after an early deficit, but Thursday night's Summit League affair went the way of preseason favorite Omaha as the Mavericks won in three sets on "Dig Pink" night inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center to improve their conference record to 8-1. The loss drops UND to 8-12 overall and 1-8 in the Summit.
Seven Omaha service errors aided the Hawks in an opening frame which began with the visiting Mavericks jumping out to a 6-0 start. UNO countered its inefficiency from the serving line with six team blocks in the first set. Unshaken by UNO's start, North Dakota battled back to tie the frame at 17. Edlund led with three kills in the opening action and aided on a combo denial and the two sides traded points following the Hawks' effort to even the frame at 17. The first set saw six of the match's ten ties and half of its four lead changes. UND held leads of 19-18, 20-19 and 21-20.
The Mavericks, after attacking at .171 in set one, hit .393 in the second frame in addition to forcing the host into the negative. UNO delivered 15 kills and added two more blocks with a service ace in the stanza. It was nearly an identical third frame for the Mavericks as the visitors recorded 15 kills with two more blocks and an ace. UND posted its best hitting effort of the night in the third set at .135 with 11 kills.
North Dakota welcomes in St. Thomas for a noon start on Saturday. The Tommies topped UND in straight sets, with the first two sets contested to 28-26, on October 17 in St. Paul. Postgame Notes
- Edlund's first career start was highly efficient as she delivered the second-most kills and the second-most attempts (16) for UND in addition to recording a pair of digs
- Junior Paige Barber led the Hawks with eight kills and is six away from 200 for the season
- Junior Izzie McCormick produced 11 digs and graduate Elizabeth Norris was responsible for 14 of UND's 25 assists
- McCormick is 10 digs from 300 for the season and Norris is four assists shy of 400 this fall
- UND's four total blocks are the second fewest against a Summit League team in nine matches this season
- Thursday night's action marked the first time in 20 matches that the Hawks did not register an ace
- Omaha's 15 service errors are the second-most by a UND foe this season
