GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The sweaters were ugly, and the Fighting Hawks were hooping. North Dakota men's basketball snapped a four-game losing skid in a big way by rocking South Dakota Mines 80-48 on Friday night inside a Christmas-clad Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The victory is the fifth for the Hawks this season.
North Dakota started fast and used first-half runs of 6-0, 22-3 and 8-0 to build a comfortable 47-15 lead at the intermission. The Hawks controlled the paint at +22 in scoring in addition to +8 in rebounding in the opening twenty. Junior guard
Treysen Eaglestaff and sophomore guard
Mier Panoam each found double figures in scoring prior to the break. Eaglestaff delivered 15 and Panoam followed with 10.
The damage was done in the first half and the Hawks capped off the night with two dozen bench points in the final twenty minutes as each side delivered 33 points in the frame.
North Dakota eases into a much needed hiatus for the Christmas holiday before returning to action on December 29 against Waldorf. It will be the fifth meeting with the Warriors and the first since 2015 with UND holding a 4-0 series lead. It will be the final nonconference matchup before league play commences on the first weekend of January. Action tips off at 2 p.m. inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center and can be seen on the Summit League Network.
Fans can follow the action live with Fighting Hawks men's basketball radio play-by-play voice Paul Ralston on KSNR 100.3 FM The Cat or on the iHeart Radio app. Live stats for the contest will be available at www.FightingHawks.com.
