YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The North Dakota softball team finished the Mardi Gras Mambo on Sunday, falling 8-0 to Louisiana Monroe.
In the top of the first the Fighting Hawks got two runners on with two outs as Cassie Castaneda singled down the left field line and Madison Pederson walked. But neither were able to score. In the bottom of the frame, Jackie Albrecht had a 1-2-3 inning as the teams went to the second scoreless.
A single from Izzy Haslett put runner on with two outs in the top of the second, but once again a two out hit was not advanced. In the bottom of the second a fielder's choice brought in two runs to score, then a triple brought in another run and then a bunt single scored the fourth run of the frame for ULM.
The Warhawks added one more in both the third and fourth innings to make it a 6-0 game. In the top of the fifth, Kimora Johnson pinch hit and led off with a walk. A one out single from pinch hitting Hannah Thompson moved Johnson to second. A dropped ball by ULM off the bat of Katie Joten loaded the bases with one out, but back-to-back flyouts ended the NoDak threat. Two runs scored by ULM in the bottom of the fifth finished the game.
Victoria Abrams got the win while Albrecht took the loss.
"The score wasn't indicative of how we played" Coach Jordan Stevens remarked after the game. "We made a couple of mistakes that allowed them to explode for big innings. We squared balls up with runners in scoring position that were right at them. Weekend of 'what could have been' but this team will compete."
The Fighting Hawks will be back in action this Friday at the UTEP/NMSU Tournament with a doubleheader against Sacramento State.
