Three Hawks Win Gold, NoDak Women Hold Top Spot at Conference Meet

FARGO, N.D. – Malene Kollberg (pentathlon), Kenna Curry (weight throw) and Yonca Kutluk (3,000 meters) each won a gold medal while North Dakota finished with six medals on the opening day of the Summit League Indoor Championships at the Shelley Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility on Friday.

The NoDak women piled up 67 points and hold the top spot going into day two of the meet, while the Fighting Hawk men scored 12 points on the opening day and are tied for fourth.

Kollberg, the 2023 Summit League pentathlon champion, won the gold medal and gained All-Summit League honors for the second year in a row with a PR total of 3,904 points. With the win, she became the first Summit League champion in the pentathlon to go back-to-back since Sami Spenner of Omaha in 2013 and 2014. Kollberg's finish also improved her No. 2 point total on the UND top-10 list.

The 2023 and 2024 pentathlon champion led all pentathletes in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.77 for her first 959 points of the day. She also tied for the second-best height in the high jump with a clearance of 5-5 1/4 (1.66m) for 806 points and added an additional 603 points in the shot put (36-5 3/4, 11.12m). With two events to go, Kollberg sat second on the leaderboard and moved up to the top spot after finishing third in the long jump with a leap of 18-9 3/4 (5.73m). She needed to finish within 16 seconds of the winner of the 800 meters to become victorious in the pentathlon and repeat as the champion. In the 800 meters, Kollberg ran the fourth-fastest time (2:23.96), while Nell Graham of North Dakota State had the fastest time (2:13.73).

Tiffanie Magnusson, the 2023 runner-up in the pentathlon, earned All-Summit League status for the second season in a row and another silver medal with a PR total of 3,862 points. Her point total improved her No. 3 mark on the UND top-10 list. Magnusson recorded the top mark in the long jump with a leap of 19-4 3/4 (5.91m). She finished strong in the 800 meters and had the second-fastest time with a PR of 2:21.60. Magnusson also had a personal-best throw in the shot put (36-2, 11.02m) and tied her PR in the high jump with a height of 5-4 1/4 (1.63m).

Later in the meet, Magnusson and Kollberg returned to take part in the long jump. Magnusson, the bronze medalist in 2023, earned the silver medal with a jump of 19-7 (5.97m). Kollberg took fourth with a leap of 19-1 1/4 (5.82m).

In the weight throw, Curry earned All-Summit League status and the gold medal with a throw of 69-2 (21.08m). She had to come from behind, as she did not have the top mark in the event until her fifth throw. Last season, Curry was fifth in the weight throw.

Teammates Eve Goldstein and Julia Matthews also combined to add three points to UND's total in the weight throw. Goldstein finished seventh with a toss of 58-8 1/2 (17.89m) and Julia Matthews placed eighth with a mark of 57-1 (17.40m).

Towards the end of the meet, Kutluk finished with the gold medal and earned All-Summit League accolades in the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 9:27.20. Jadyn Keeler (9:47.26) and Eliana Malnourie (9:50.63) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Luke Labatte finished with the bronze medal in the men's 3,000 meters and All-Summit League honors with a time of 8:20.87. Teammate Jamie Burns was eighth in 8:23.91 and added a point to North Dakota's total.

In the final event on the track, the women's distance medley relay team of Elle Sondag, Courtney Werner, Brooklyn Brouse and Frida Giersdorff added the final five points of the day for UND and finished fourth in a time of 12:14.86. That time currently ranks No. 8 in program history.

The men's distance medley relay squad of Micah Bruggeman, P.K. Moore, Tanner Schiller and Henrik Lindstrot placed fifth and posted a time of 10:15.44, which was good for the No. 4 time in school history.

Earlier in the day, Elle Thorson took sixth in the pentathlon with 3,419 points. Her top event was the was the 60-meter hurdles where she picked up a day-high 873 points and had a personal-best time of 9.18.

Eucabeth Kivikangas placed seventh in the pentathlon with 3,386 points. She had the top mark in the shot put with a toss of 39-4 1/2 (12.00m). She also posted a personal-best in the 60-meter hurdles (9.36) and tied her PR in the high jump (4-11 1/2, 1.51m).

In the preliminary rounds on the track, three sprinters advanced to the finals. Alec Nelson (1:53.60) had the top time and Justice Dick (1:54.15) was second in his heat to both automatically qualify for the 800-meter final. Jerzie Finstad picked up the final qualifying spot in the 400 meters with a time of 57.09.

Maguire Petersen had a phenomenal opening day in the heptathlon and currently leads all heptathletes through the first four events with 3,206 points. He picked up his first 851 points in the 60 meters, where he ran the second-fastest time (7.09). Petersen not only had the top mark in the long jump and posted a personal-best with a leap of 22-10 3/4 (6.98m), but also moved onto the UND top-10 list with the No. 9 mark in school history. He finished the afternoon leading all heptathletes in the shot put (47-2 1/4, 14.38m) and high jump (6-6 1/4, 1.99m). His mark in the shot put was a new PR.

North Dakota will conclude competition at the Summit League Indoor Championships on Saturday. The heptathlon will resume at 9:30 a.m., followed by field events at 11:30 a.m. and action on the track at 1 p.m. Live results will continue to be provided by Hero's Timing.
