YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The North Dakota softball team split two games on Friday—falling 2-1 to Southern in eight innings in the first game and defeating Nicholls State 4-2 in the second game of the day. The Fighting Hawks grabbed an opening day win for the first time since the 2020 season.
Game 1: SU 2, UND 1
The first game was pitcher's duel as neither team was able to plate a run before extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Madison Pederson scored Katie Joten. However in the bottom of the frame the Jaguars were able to get two runs to take the game.
Game 2: UND 4, NSU 2
Offense was hard to come by in the first two innings of this game, with the first hit coming in the bottom of the third for Nicholls. A single and stolen base moved Samantha Gwiazda into scoring position and she came in on a single to left to make it 1-0.
In the top of the fourth the green and white answered with a two out triple from Taya Hopfauf. Katelyn Neumayer followed by reaching on an error and making it to second base as Hopfauf scored the tying run. Mariah Peters followed with a single to right that brought Neumayer in from second to make it 2-1.
NSU answered with a two out RBI single in the bottom of the frame to make it 2-2. After a scoreless fifth UND got two runs in the top of the sixth—Pederson doubled to right center with one out, then Kaycee Hayes was brought in to pinch run. After a foulout gave UND two outs, Neumayer singled to left center and Hayes scored the go-ahead run. Izzy Haslett followed with a single to right field that brought Neumayer in to score and make it 4-2.
Makaela Carr pitched 2.2 innings in relief, picking up the win. She retired two in the bottom of the fifth and then stranded a leadoff single at second base in the sixth. In the seventh with the tying run of first and winning run at the plate with two outs, Carr got a fielder's choice to finish the game.
