Fighting Hawks Fall to Princeton and Grand Canyon to Conclude Weekend in California

FULLERTON, Calif. – The North Dakota softball team finished off a road trip to both coasts and weekend in California with two games Sunday against Princeton and Grand Canyon, falling 2-1 to the Tigers and then 8-0 to the Lopes.

Game One

Starting pitchers Camryn Lasota and Cassidy Shaw both pitched well, with Lasota throwing a complete game and Shaw going five innings. In the bottom of the first Lasota got out of a tight spot after a two out triple, ending the inning. In the top of the third UND got two walks but could not bring a run across to break the deadlock.

In the top of the fourth, a two out double from Taya Hopfauf moved Mariah Peters to third base after she had walked. But Princeton got out of the jam and kept the game scoreless after 3.5 innings. The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the frame on a sac fly, but NoDak answered in the top of the fifth as Katelyn Neumayer singled through the left side, followed by a double from Brooklyn Morris and a sac fly from Katie Joten to knot it up. Princeton got on the board again in the bottom of the fifth to go back ahead, and held onto the win the rest of the way.

Shaw got the win while Lasota took the loss.

Game Two

GCU got off to a fast start with four runs in the first inning and two more in the second. In the top of the third the Fighting Hawks picked up their first hit of the game with a single from Angie Dumlao that moved Brookyln Morris from first to third; after she had reached on a fielder's choice. But with two outs Morris ended up stranded 60 feet from home. In the top of the fourth UND threatened again as Izzy Haslett led off with a double and later moved to third on a wild pitcher, but once again the threat was stifled on the doorstep of home plate. A two run homerun in the bottom of the fifth finished the game.

Meghan Golden got the win while Makaela Carr took the loss.
