Fighting Hawks Fall in 11-10 Slugfest at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – On Friday night the North Dakota softball team scored its highest number of runs to date this season, putting up ten against Nebraska, but fell just short 11-10. Katie Joten led the Fighting Hawks with three hits and tied with Cassie Castaneda for the team lead with two runs. Izzy Haslett, Katelyn Neumayer and Angie Dumlao each had two RBIs in the game.

NoDak struck in the top of the first has Joten was hit by a pitch, then came in to score on a single from Johanna Rodriguez. Mariah Peters followed with a walk to load the bases and then Neumayer hit a single up the middle to make the game 2-0. Later with the bases loaded Hannah Thompson drew a walk and then Dumlao followed with a walk to make it 4-0.

Nebraska got three back in the bottom of the first, and Joten led off the second inning with a homerun to right field. Castaneda and Rodriguez both followed with singles. Later in the inning Neumayer hit an RBI single that brought Castaneda in and made it 6-3. Taya Hopfauf followed with a single that stayed fair down the left field line and brought Raegan Kraft, who was pinch runner for Rodriguez, in to make it 7-3.

In the bottom of the third Nebraska got four runs, and Makaela Carr came on in relief of Jackie Albrecht with the game tied at seven and shut down the Huskers the rest of the frame to keep the game tied at seven heading to the fourth.

With two outs Thompson drew another walk to reach and move Hopfauf to second. Dumlao followed with a single to right center that brought Hopfauf in to score and take back the lead at 8-7. Haslett followed with a two-RBI double on a 3-2 count that brought Thompson and Dumlao in to score and make it 10-7. Nebraska got two on the board in the bottom of the fourth. After that both pitchers, Carr and Nebraska starter Kaylin Kinney, didn't allow a run in the fifth or sixth innings. A two-run homerun by Nebraska walked off the game in the bottom of the seventh.
