Two-Run Seventh Inning Lifts Bears Over Fighting Hawks 4-3

LINCOLN, Neb. – The North Dakota softball team fell 4-3 to Northern Colorado on Saturday, finishing up a set of three games at the Big Red Classic. Taya Hopfauf picked up two hits and scored a run while Izzy Haslett and Angie Dumlao also scored for the Fighting Hawks.

Jackie Albrecht got out of a jam in the bottom of the second inning with runners on second and third and two outs—a strikeout ended the threat. UND got on the board in the top of the third inning as Dumlao and Haslett reached and then Katie Joten moved the runners to second and third on a sac bunt. Cassie Castaneda followed with a single through the left side that brought Dumlao in. Johanna Rodriguez followed with a sac fly that scored Haslett to make it 2-0.

UNC answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, but UND took back in the lead in the top of the fourth as Hopfauf singled up the middle and then advanced when Dumlao was hit by pitch. Haslett singled to center which brought Hopfauf in to score and make it 3-2.

Albrecht got out of trouble again in the bottom of the fifth as a flyout stranded runners on second and third to keep the green and white in the lead. In the top of the seventh the Fighting Hawks had runners on first and second but could not get an insurance run, keeping it one run game heading to the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back one out RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh produced two runs for the Bears, who took the game.

Reliever Erin Caviness picked up the win for UNC while Albrecht took the loss.

Tomorrow the Fighting Hawks will play a doubleheader at Creighton starting at noon.

 

Postgame Notes 

·        This loss extends the Fighting Hawks losing streak to ten games, and is the second straight game in which NoDak took a one run lead into the bottom of the seventh.

·        Hopfauf now has six hits in the last five games, including two two-hit games.

·        Castaneda got her first RBI since March 2 at FIU, her fifth of the season.

·        Rodriguez has four hits in three games this weekend.
