MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The North Dakota softball team resumed its Sunshine State slate with a Tuesday morning game against the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles, falling to USI 5-0.

Katie Joten singled in the first at bat of the game, then stole second. Two other occasions the Fighting Hawks got into scoring position—in the third inning the first two batters, Hannah Thompson and Katie Joten, walked but a fielder's choice got the lead runner and two more outs finished off the inning. In the fifth, Thompson walked and Joten reached on an error but a lineout on a double play ended the inning.

USI got on the board in the second inning and then scored four in the third.

Starter Makaela Carr threw 2.2 innings before Katelyn Strauss came in in relief and made her first appearance of the season for the Fighting Hawks. In 3.1 innings Strauss gave up one hit and struck out three batters. 

Josie Newman got the win while Carr took the loss.

The Fighting Hawks will play one final game in Florida tomorrow at Bethune-Cookman at 2 p.m. before heading to California for the Fullerton Round Robin.

Postgame Notes 

·        Thompson drew two walks, the first time she has walked multiple times in a game.

·        Joten stole her sixth base of the season.

·        Strauss pitched for the first time since May 27 against Corning CC (as a member of NDSCS).

·        UND fell one win short of winning three in a row, which would have been the team's first 3+ game winning streak since winning four in a row over the last four games of the regular season in 2023.
