Fighting Hawks Fall to Fairfield and Utah State on First Day in California

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The North Dakota softball team opened up a weekend tournament in California on Friday, falling 7-3 to Fairfield and 2-0 to Utah State at the Fullerton Round Robin.

Game One

NoDak got on the board first with a two run home run in the top of the frame. Johanna Rodriguez hit her first career home run, a two-run shot that brought Katie Joten in as well after she led off the inning with a walk. Mariah Peters followed with a double but the green and white could not strike for more runs. In the bottom of the frame, Fairfield got on the board for six runs.

In the second inning, two walks put two runners on with two out. Despite the runner in scoring position, UND was unable to cut into the Stag's lead. In the bottom of the third Fairfield added one more to make it 7-2.

The Fighting Hawks got one run back in the top of the fourth inning as Taya Hopfauf laced a double down the left field line, then Angie Dumlao followed with a single to score Hopfauf from second. Camryn Lasota, pitching in relief, got out of a jam in the bottom of the fourth and stranded two runners on base. From there, pitching controlled the game as no runners passed second the rest of the game.

Alyssa Weinberg got the win while Jackie Albrecht took the loss.

Game Two

Makaela Carr threw a complete game while Utah State's Denay Smith threw 6.2 innings.

Carr got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first after the Aggies got a third single with two outs, recording her second strikeout of the frame. In the bottom of the first, Katie Joten was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and was later out at the plate while digging for home on a single by Rodriguez.

In the top of the fourth, Carr got out of a jam with runners on second and third with two outs with a groundout to keep the game scoreless. The deadlock was finally broken in the top of the fifth as USU got on the board with an RBI double. The Aggies got one more in the top of the seventh on an RBI single.

With one last chance, the green and white loaded the bases but could not find a way to cross the plate. Katelyn Neumayer reached on an error with one out and then Joten drew a two out walk. Angie Dumlao singled to load the bases, but USU stopped the Fighting Hawk rally.

Smith got the win while Carr took the loss.
