Carr Throws Complete Game to Lead Fighting Hawks to Game Two Win at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The North Dakota softball team picked up its second Summit League win in game two on Saturday, defeating St. Thomas 5-4 behind a complete game from Makaela Carr and RBIs from Mariah Peters, Brooklyn Morris, Angie Dumlao and Johanna Rodriguez. St. Thomas took the first game of the day 1-0 in a duel between starting pitchers Jackie Albrecht and Christina Crawford.

Game one

Cassie Castaneda kept the Tommies off the board by throwing out Kaitlyn Raymond with one out in the bottom of the first, and later Albrecht shut the door to keep it scoreless. Both pitchers settled into a groove over the next two innings, with no runner advancing past first. Izzy Haslett broke the streak with a one out triple in the fourth, but could not move the final 60 feet to break the scoreless tie.

In the bottom of the fourth Albrecht got out of trouble after two one-out walks. The lead runner advanced to third on a fielder's choice and then with runners at the corners, a two out stolen base put two runners in scoring position. But Albrecht got a flyout to finish the frame. With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, a walk brought in the lone run of the game for UST.

Crawford got the win while Albrecht took the loss.

Game two

Dumlao walked on four pitches to open the game, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Rodriguez followed and drilled a ball up the middle which got into centerfield which brought Dumlao in to score. The Tommies evened the game up in the bottom of the second, then after a scoreless third the Fighting Hawks struck big in the top of the fourth.

Taya Hopfauf led off the inning with a single to right center, then Castaneda followed with a single to third base. Katelyn Neumayer singled to center to lead the bases, which brought Peters to the plate. She doubled to center which allowed two runs to score and make it 3-1. After a pitching change, Morris came to the plate and dropped a ball down the left field line and brought Neumayer in to make it 4-1 with no outs. Katie Joten reached on a fielder's choice, with Peters getting tagged out at home and then Morris caught off the bag at second. Joten stole second base for her 12th swipe of the season, and came in to score on a single from Dumlao to make it 5-1.

In the bottom of the fourth UST answered with a three run homerun from Abbi Stierlen, but from there Carr would not allow the Tommies to get on the board and even it up. In the sixth a threat with two on and two outs was extinguished with a flyout to right, then in the seventh with runners on first and second, Carr got a flyout to right and a great play at second by Dumlao to snag a liner out of the air to end the game.

Carr got the win while Keira Murphy took the loss.

The Fighting Hawks will play the rubber match with the Tommies tomorrow at 11 a.m.
