AZUSA, Calif./LONG BEACH, Calif. – North Dakota resumed competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational and commenced action at the Beach Invitational on Friday. The Fighting Hawks shattered two school records at the meets while also placing four times and adding seven upgrades to the UND top-10 list.
In the first hour of Saturday in the central time zone,
Yonca Kutluk destroyed the 5,000-meter school record at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a time of 16:04.26. She shattered the record of Lindsay Anderson, who set it at 16:35.91 at the 2013 Mt. SAC Relays.
Earlier Friday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational,
Jamie Burns also broke the 5,000-meter school record on the men's side with a time of 14:08.08. He beat the record of teammate
Luke Labatte, who set it at 14:17.47 in Azusa at this same meet last season.
Eric Weiss led North Dakota on the track at the Beach Invitational and finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:32.32. Thursday afternoon, Weiss placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate with a PR time of 9:19.41 to move up to No. 3 in school history.
Kenna Curry was the top field athlete for UND at Long Beach, placing seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 200-11 (61.25m).
Several field events had their opening flights on Friday night at the Beach Invitational and will conclude on Saturday.
Trenton Hanseder posted a PR of 45-3 (13.79m) in the triple jump to move up to No. 6 on the UND top-10 list.
James Weninger also climbed the UND top-10 list in the high jump and posted the No. 7 height (6-7, 2.01m) in school history.
Back at the Bryan Clay Invitational,
Eucabeth Kivikangas was the runner-up in section F of the heptathlon with 4,732 points. That point total now ranks No. 7 in school history. Kivikangas had the top mark of her group in the javelin with a throw of 122-1 (37.22m). She also received a day-high event total of 721 points in the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.80.
Justina Esangbedo placed eighth in section E of the heptathlon with 4,363 points. Her point total currently sits No. 10 in UND history. Esangbedo's best event of the day was the javelin, where she piled up 538 points with a mark of 109-0 (33.23m).
Elle Thorson took 10th in section C of the heptathlon with 4,742 points. Her top event of the day based on points was the long jump, where she recorded a leap of 17-6 (5.33m).
In the later evening group,
Tiffanie Magnusson finished 10th in section B with a heptathlon point total of 4,926 points. She had the third-best leap of her group in the long jump with a mark of 18-9 1/4 (5.72m). Magnusson concluded the heptathlon in the 800 meters, where she put down a personal-best time of 2:23.59 for a day-high event total of 775 points.
Malene Kollberg was also in section B of the heptathlon with Magnusson and made it through six of the seven heptathlon events. She finished with 4,294 points. Her top event of the day was the long jump, where she picked up 738 points after a leap of 18-5 3/4 (5.63m).
Maguire Petersen competed in section C of the decathlon and made it through nine events before bowing out of the competition. He finished with 6,464 points. Even after bowing out of competition, his point total currently ranks No. 3 in school history. Petersen started the day by tying his personal-best time in the 100-meter hurdles (15.48) and also set a PR in the pole vault (13-5 1/4, 4.10m).
