DES MOINES, Iowa -- The No. 4 seed North Dakota saw its season come to an end by a 4-1 decision to nationally ranked, unbeaten and top-seeded Denver on Friday afternoon in the Summit League Semifinals from Des Moines, Iowa.
UND, who had to replace nearly its entire lineup from a year ago, finishes the campaign with a 7-16 overall record and a 3-2 mark in league play, with the tie for second place in the conference standings coming as its highest finish since joining the Summit League in 2019. The Fighting Hawks have also now reached the postseason in four straight seasons, the longest stretch in the program's Division I history.
The Hawks put up a strong fight against one of the top teams in the nation, with five of the six singles matches going into a third-and-final set. The one match that didn't go the distance was
Ange-Kevin Koua on the No. 3 court, as the sophomore rolled to a pair of 6-4 triumphs to knot the contest at 1-1 after DU took the doubles point.
Ethan Terry and
Victor Moreno Lozano each grabbed wins in their opening sets on the No. 4 and 2 courts, respectively, but Denver rallied back for wins in the tiebreaker to grab a 3-1 lead and push the match to its brink.
Jayho Hong couldn't quite complete the comeback at the fifth spot after bouncing back in the middle frame with a 6-3 win, falling in the tiebreaker by the same score to give the Pioneers the match victory.
Leandro Zgraggen and
Jerall Yasin were each locked in their third sets on the top and bottom courts when play was halted.
