GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota women's basketball coach
Mallory Bernhard announced the addition of Grafton, N.D., native Walker Demers to the Fighting Hawks 2024-25 recruiting class.
"We could not be more excited to bring Walker into our family," said Bernhard. "She is a great competitor, someone that we know and believe can be a dominant player in this league and we can't wait to see her take things to the next level here. Coach Mo and I really wanted to share with Walker and her family the vision we have for her and how bright her future here will be, and we are thrilled she believes in us as much as we believe in her! Bringing Walker back home to represent the great state of North Dakota is a huge deal, we know how proudly she will wear the green and white!"
Demers spent the past two seasons at South Dakota, where she played in 62 games while making 43 starts for the Coyotes. In her sophomore season, Demers averaged 6.0 points per game on .507 percent shooting and was the team's third leading rebounder at 4.1 boards per contest. She poured in a career high 19 points while going 6-of-7 from the floor, 6-for-8 from the free throw line and knocked down a three-pointer in a win at Kansas City. She also pulled down seven rebounds and tallied two steals against the Roos. She nearly recorded her first double-double at Montana, where she scored 13 points and corralled nine rebounds. Demers reached double-figure scoring in four games last season and 12 times in her career. Demers helped the Coyotes to the No. 4 seed at the Summit League Tournament with a 9-7 conference record and advanced to the semifinal round where they fell to South Dakota State, 76-63.
In her freshman season, Demers was one of six Coyotes to appear in all 30 games and earned 13 starts as a true freshman. She finished as the team's second leading rebounder at 4.9 boards per game and was the fifth leading scorer with 7.0 points per contest on .453 percent shooting. She scored a season-high 14 points and hauled in eight rebounds against Western Illinois on Dec. 31, 2022. Demers was named to the 2022-23 Summit League honor roll.
During her prep career at Grafton High School, she recorded over 1,000 points, 750 rebounds and 200 blocks while leading the Spoilers to a 110-18 record. She was named to the all-region team in three-straight seasons, the all-state tournament team three times and was the 2021 North Dakota State Tournament MVP. Demers led the state in blocked shots during the 2020 season with 98 rejections.
