GRAND FORKS, N.D. - North Dakota will open the 2024 season on Aug. 31, visiting Iowa State at Jack Trice Stadium. Kickoff between the Fighting Hawks and Cyclones is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1 and will be carried on the Fighting Hawks Radio Network with a pregame show starting at 1:30 p.m.
The Fighting Hawks are coming off a 7-5 season and a 5-3 standing in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. After an intense quarterback battle,
Simon Romfo emerged as the top quarterback and was named the starter on Aug. 19. He rushed nine times for 49 yards and a pair of scores and also went 2-for-2 passing in 2023.
Bo Belquist will likely be a top receiving target after being named to the Reese's Senior Bowl Watchlist earlier this month and already receiving Preseason All-America status from two publications.
Wyatt Pedigo is also back and expected to spearhead the defensive unit after leading the nation with four fumble recoveries last season.
The Cyclones compiled a record of 7-6 and a Big 12 Conference mark of 6-3 in 2023. They return the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year from 2023 in quarterback Rocco Becht, who broke ISU freshman records for touchdown passes (23) and passing yards (3,120). Iowa State also had a strong defensive unit last season, finishing the year tied for No. 18 nationally in turnover margin (+8.0) with 16 interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
This will be the first-ever meeting between UND and ISU. Iowa State is the fifth member from the current Big 12 Conference to appear on North Dakota's schedule, with UND also facing Utah (2017), Texas Tech (2009), Arizona State (1940) and TCU (1933) in its history. NoDak will be looking for its first win against an FBS opponent since defeating Wyoming, 24-13, in its 2015 season opener.
