Hawks drop contest with #17 Minnesota

Gophers hit .433, use eight aces to move past UND

GREEN BAY, Wisc. – North Dakota volleyball's four match win streak ended on Friday evening inside the Kress Center as #17 Minnesota swept the Hawks at the Capital Credit Union Classic. The loss drops UND to 6-4, while the Gophers improve to 6-3 with their fifth-straight win.

The Hawks battled early as consecutive kills from senior Jarolin de los Santos Lugo evened the first set at 7-7. Moments later, a kill from freshman Cala Cooper pulled UND to within 12-11 of the Minnesota lead, but the Gophers used a 10-3 run to build distance and claim the opening frame.

Like set one, the second set was also tied at 7-7, but the Gophers closed with a 7-0 run, a 5-0 run and a 6-0 run, while single kills from Cooper and Santos Lugo the lone Hawk points in the frame. North Dakota had no problem starting on Friday as the Hawks trailed just 6-5 in the early going of the third set. However, the Gophers engineered another run midway through a set as a 14-4 advantage led to the sweep.

The Fighting Hawks close out the Capital Credit Union Classic on Saturday at 2 p.m. against host Green Bay. The two sides will meet for the 12th time with UND leading the all-time series 8-3. The Hawks swept the Phoenix in Grand Forks last September. Live stats for the contest will be available at FightingHawks.com.
