Fighting Hawks come up short in Brookings

Grand Forks, N.D. – The University of North Dakota women's basketball team fell short against South Dakota State, 87-73, on Saturday afternoon at the First Bank & Trust Arena. The loss dropped the Fighting Hawks to 8-11 overall and 3-3 in Summit League play.

North Dakota started slow, trailing 26-14 after the first quarter as South Dakota State shot an impressive 53.8% (7-of-13) from the field. Walker Demers paced the frame with five points off one three and two free throws.

The Hawks responded with a 56.3% (9-of-16) shooting performance in the second quarter, but the Jackrabbits shot 64.7% (11-of-17) to keep the deficit at 49-37 going into the half. Jocelyn Schiller led the quarter with nine points, including two three-pointers.

With strong performances from Jocelyn Schiller and Kiera Pemberton, for a combined 11 points and 50% (6-of-12) shooting, the Hawks led scoring in the third 20-19. UND didn't allow a single turnover and made one steal.

The Fighting Hawks put up a strong effort in the fourth quarter over a key stretch to stay competitive. Jocelyn Schiller led the charge with 6 points in the period. Despite the efforts, UND could not close the gap, ultimately falling short to SDSU.

The Fighting Hawks will take a week and return to action as they head down to North Dakota State on Saturday, January 25.
