GRAND FORKS, N.D. – No. 14/15 North Dakota returned from break and shook off the rust in style, notching a 5-0 exhibition victory over Manitoba on Saturday night from a sold-out Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
The Fighting Hawks received goals from
Mac Swanson,
Dalton Andrew,
Dane Montgomery,
Carter Wilkie and
Cody Croal in the win while goaltenders
Hobie Hedquist and
T.J. Semptimphelter each finished with eight saves to share the shutout.
NoDak dominated the first and third periods of the contest, finishing with a 12-2 shot advantage over the opening 20 minutes and then notching a 21-3 shot lead in the final stanza to finish the game with a 44-16 count. Sophomore forward
Jayden Perron led all skaters with seven shots on target while junior forward
Owen McLaughlin had six to pace the attack.
Both goaltenders were called upon in the middle frame, with Hedquist making six stops and Semptimphelter turning aside another five to help UND turn a 1-0 advantage into a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.
After a back-and-forth second period, UND came out attacking in the third with a trio of goals to put the contest away and secure the 5-0 victory.
North Dakota gets back into regular season play next weekend against Arizona State in Tempe beginning on Friday night at 9:00 p.m. (CT) on CBS Sports Network and the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
