FARGO, N.D. – Behind six saves from Grace Miller and a lethal second-half goal from Yui Fujii, the Fighting Hawks soccer team secured a 1-0 victory on North Dakota State's home turf on Sunday afternoon at Dacotah Field.
The rivalry win breaks several streaks for UND, serving as the first conference victory since Oct. 13, 2023, and the first conference road win since March 7, 2020. It is also the Fighting Hawks' first defeat of the Bison in Fargo since Aug. 18, 2017.
It was a gritty start—and first half of action—in the conference contest, with UND registering an early team save 2:54 into the game. Despite two corner kicks from the Bison, Miller would notch three saves through the first 45 minutes to help keep the stalemate locked at 0-0 at the end of the first half.
UND collected its first corner kick of the match in the 53rd minute, but back-to-back fouls from the Bison went on to set up the visitors with back-to-back free kicks. Just 30 seconds later, Fujii became the headliner of the match in the 62nd minute of action. With a free kick off the left foot into the bottom right of the goal, the Fighting Hawks firmly took the 1-0 lead.
Defense held strong through the remaining 28 minutes of competition, fending off two corner kicks and allowing just two more shots on goal.
Following the victory, UND improves to 7-5-3 heading into a two-game home slate coming later this week while NDSU drops to 5-10 overall
