UND Dominates St. Thomas, 5-2, in Closing Regular Season Contest

St. Paul, Minn. – The Fighting Hawks soccer team put the pedal to the metal early and kept on cruising to a convincing 5-2 victory over the St. Thomas Tommies in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon at South Field.

First half of competition was all NoDak, totaling two corner kicks and two shots in just the first three minutes alone. Charlie Basinet opened the scoring with a first half brace, first in the 9th minute and again in the 21st minute to take the 2-0 lead with Cora Ellermann, Amelia Loeffler and Natalie Enderle each tallying an assist. The halftime score turned to 3-0 after a score from Hunter Borgel put UND firmly in control.

Another two goals within three minutes of each other—including a penalty kick goal from Yui Fujii—early in the second half made it a 5-0 game before the Tommies netted two goals of their own. The momentum change, though, proved not to be enough as the Fighting Hawks headed home with the season-ending 5-2 win.

Despite the showstopping display, UND was edged out of the Summit League postseason tournament by Omaha, who narrowly defeated Kansas City, 2-1, mere minutes after the NoDak win to secure the final spot in the playoffs. UND concludes its season with an 8-7-3 overall record and a 2-4-2 showing in Summit League play.
