ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Senior forward
Carter Wilkie snuck a shot through the five hole before goaltender
T.J. Semptimphelter made his second straight stop to help No. 16/17 North Dakota earn a 4-3 shootout victory over St. Cloud State on Friday night from the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
While the game goes down as a 3-3 tie in the NCAA records, UND (12-10-2, 7-5-1 NCHC) earns a huge second point in the league standings to remain in the fourth-and-final home ice spot for the NCHC Quarterfinals with 11 games remaining.
The Fighting Hawks looked well on their way to earning a full three points with a regulation win, however, as the visitors built a 3-1 lead heading into the third period, but St. Cloud State (11-13-1, 4-10-1 NCHC) struck twice in the final 20 minutes to rally back and force overtime.
In the extra session, UND had a huge chance in the final seconds on a delayed call, but a chance at a yawning cage just went wide as the teams had to settle for a tie.
Cameron Berg kept up his torrid offensive pace over the last few games, potting a pair of goals for his first two-goal game since Feb. 23, 2024 vs. Minnesota Duluth while fellow forward
Jayden Perron dished out a pair of assists for his first multi-point game since Dec. 7 at Miami.
Freshman defenseman
Jayden Jubenvill scored his first-collegiate goal in the contest, driving to the net and making a slick move around the goaltender for his first while Semptimphelter finished with 21 saves on 24 shots.
UND looked to get off to a strong start, striking just over a minute into the game on a
Mac Swanson goal, but the play was successfully overturned for offside to bring the score back to 0-0 before the Huskies potted their first shot of the game from Ethan AuCoin to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the 5:10 mark of the first.
The visitors answered right back, however, with Jubenvill sliding home his first as a Fighting Hawk off a great feed from
Sacha Boisvert to knot the game just 1:21 later and Berg wiring home a rocket from the slot at the 8:35 mark to give UND a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.
UND kept up its strong play in the middle stanza, with Berg eventually striking for his second of the night with a similar snipe from the slot to give the senior his eighth of the season in just 12 games and a 3-1 NoDak lead heading into the final period of regulation.
After killing off a pair of penalties, UND was unable to capture the momentum as AuCoin struck again near the midway point of the frame to pull the Huskies within a goal at 3-2. With time dwindling away, SCSU eventually tied the game at 3-3 when a shot deflected off of Barrett Hall and found its way through Semptimphelter to send the contest into overtime.
Despite chances for both teams in the extra session, neither side was able to break the tie before Wilkie and Perron each scored in the shootout to give UND the extra point in the standings.
North Dakota will go for the series victory on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. on Midco Sports Two, NCHC.tv and Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
