MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis closed out a perfect weekend on the road, notching a 4-2 victory over Marquette on Saturday evening from the Sprovier Tennis Complex in Milwaukee, Wis.
The win gives the Fighting Hawks five straight victories and improves them to 8-3 after the final match in the month of February.
"It is encouraging and exciting to see how many different ways this team is finding to win a match," said UND head coach
Tom Boysen. "There were parts of the match last night that were honestly frustrating and troublesome, but the bottom line is that in some of the biggest moments of the individual matches, we had players step and play amazing tennis."
After a thrilling doubles point in yesterday's contest, Marquette took the point today with a pair of wins on the No. 1 and 2 court. The bottom pairing of
Leo Galliano and
Andrew Hayduke II notched a victory for the Fighting Hawks by a 6-4 score.
Marquette extended its lead to 2-0 on the top court before the visitors rallied back with four straight wins to claim the match.
Ethan Terry started the rally with a 6-3, 6-4 victory from the fourth position before Galliano knotted the contest up at 2-2 with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph at the No. 3 spot.
Leandro Zgraggen gave the Fighting Hawks a 3-2 lead on the No. 2 court by a 7-5, 6-4 score and
Christos Alex provided the clinch with a 6-4, 6-0 win at the bottom spot to secure the 4-2 victory.
"In today's match, the guys battled back from losing a close doubles point to find a way to win the match," said Boysen. "Congrats to
Christos Alex for getting his first clinch today in another back-and-forth battle with Marquette."
North Dakota will open league play next Sunday against Drake at 10 a.m. from Des Moines.
