STEPHENVILLE, Texas – North Dakota entered the seventh inning down 9-5 to New Mexico, but the Hawks refused to go quietly into the Texas night and proceeded to plate five runs as a two-run single up the middle by
Jackie Albrecht cut the deficit in half moments before
Camryn Lasota hammered a two-strike pitch over the scoreboard in left centerfield for a 10-9 Hawks lead. The advantage would hold in the bottom half as North Dakota snapped a four-game losing streak. Earlier in the day, the Hawks dropped an 8-4 decision to host Tarleton State.
Lasota enjoyed a three-hit, three RBI effort in the nightcap with her go-ahead blast also serving as her first career home run. Albrecht collected a pair of hits with five RBI in the win with the second aiding the comeback effort in a huge way and the first standing as her first career home run: a three-run blast to stake the Hawks to a 4-0 lead in the third.
New Mexico responded with a seven-run third inning as six hits staked the Lobos to a three-run lead. UNM added an eighth run in the fourth and after
Makenna Alexander reached on an infield error which scored Lasota for the Hawks' fifth run in the top of the sixth, the Lobos pushed across their ninth run in the home half as a one-out triple scored.
In the seventh,
Brooklyn Morris walked to lead off the frame,
Taya Hopfauf singled down the line in right field and following a UNM change in the circle,
Katelyn Neumayer reached on a base on balls to load the bases for Albrecht. In just her 15
th career at bat, Albrecht delivered with contact up the middle to score two and set the stage for Lasota who, in just her 11
th career at bat, promptly gave the Hawks a 10-9 lead which was upheld in the bottom half as
Unity Nelson closed out a 4.1 inning relief effort by retiring the Lobos in order to pick up her third win of the season.
In Saturday's opener, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second as
Callie Honig doubled in Neumayer. The Texans took a 2-1 lead in the second and a 5-1 lead in the fourth. In the visiting half of the fifth, Hopfauf left the yard to the opposite field to plate three and pull the Hawks to within a run of the host's advantage. Tarleton managed to fend off the Hawks with a single tally in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
The Hawks return to Grand Forks following its eight-game slate in the southwest. UND prepares for five contests this coming weekend at the Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg, South Carolina. North Dakota will match up with the host twice, Buffalo twice and Tennessee State once. Live coverage links for the weekend's action will be available at www.FightingHawks.com.
