Hopfauf walks off Drake, Hawks win third straight to cap opening weekend

UND plates four in the sixth and rides Carr’s gritty effort in the circle to finish season-opening weekend 3-2

CEDRA FALLS, Iowa - Taya Hopfauf hammered an eighth inning pitch into right field for a ground-rule double to break a 4-4 tie and give North Dakota its third-straight win and second in as many days over Drake. UND closes out the opening weekend of action at 3-2 overall and sits above .500 for the first time since starting the 2020 season at 3-2.

Drake moved out to a 2-0 lead through five innings, but a home half of the sixth saw Katelyn Neumayer record a sacrifice fly and Angie Dumlao register an RBI single to even the game at 2-2.

Both teams were turned away with runners on in the seventh and after the Bulldogs plated the extra inning placement runner and added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, the Hawks were down to their final at bat.

Dumlao struck again to plate Olivia Dick, while a fielding error in Alaina Foreman's at bat scored the tying run and set the table for Hopfauf who delivered the walk-off knock. Not to be lost in the final inning was a lead off single by Neumayer and a walk by Makenna Alexander which helped load the bases with no outs and the Hawks trailing by two.

Carr's effort saw her scatter six hits and three walks to fan seven in eight innings of work.

The Hawks return to action this coming weekend at the Littlewood Classic hosted by Arizona State. A full schedule of the five game, three day event as well as live coverage links for the action will be available at www.FightingHawks.com.
