GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team stretched its winning streak to double digits, taking down Oral Roberts by a 5-2 score on Sunday morning from Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D.
"Every team has parts of their season in which the schedule presents some unique challenges," said UND head coach
Tom Boysen. "For our team, this was definitely one of those stretches. Playing three matches in three days outside in warmer weather in Florida and then playing a conference match indoors with only one practice day is challenging. I am pleased with this team's willingness to face that gauntlet of a week head-on and embrace the opportunity. If we don't test ourselves consistently with different types of adversity, then we won't ever find out what type of team we really have this year."
The win streak now stands at 10 straight matches, matching the program's longest that was set to open the 2022-23 season while also stretching the Fighting Hawks to 13-3 overall and 2-0 in Summit League play.
"Congrats to this group of men for tying the UND men's tennis record of consecutive wins with ten," said Boysen.
UND slipped in doubles action in the early morning, with
Leo Galliano and
Andrew Hayduke II starting it off with a 6-1 victory on the bottom court, but Oral Roberts responded with back-to-back wins from the No. 1 and 2 positions to claim the 1-0 lead.
The dropped point didn't seem to phase the hosts, however, as NoDak responded with five straight wins in singles play to win the overall match.
Ethan Terry made quick work his opponent on the No. 5 court with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph to even the match at 1-1 before Hayduke II gave the Hawks the lead for good by a 6-3, 6-4 score from the fourth spot.
Galliano pushed the match to its clinching point with a pair of 6-2 scores on the No. 3 court while
Leandro Zgraggen provided the clinch at the top spot with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph.
Ange-Kevin Koua added the fifth-and-final point of the day for UND with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) victory from the second position to close out the overall match win.
North Dakota will look to set a new program record for consecutive wins at Omaha on Friday, Mar. 28 at 4:30 p.m.
