NoDak wins again, sets up regular season title showdown with Denver

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team extended its winning streak to a second month, notching a 5-2 win over Illinois State on Saturday afternoon from Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D.

The win extends the team's record winning streak to 14 straight while also marking the first time in the program's Summit League history recording four conference victories. UND's 4-0 mark in league play guarantees the Fighting Hawks will be either the No. 1 or 2 seed in the upcoming Summit League Men's Tennis Championships, with next Sunday's matchup with Denver deciding the regular season crown.

Doubles was a back-and-forth affair, with play coming down to the final court. UND looked to take an early advantage with a 6-3 win on the middle court by Andrew Hayduke II and Ethan Terry, but Illinois State responded back from the top position with a 6-4 victory to turn all eyes to the No. 3 spot. There, ISU held off a late comeback from Jerall Yasin and Leo Galliano to grab a 1-0 lead with a 7-6 (9-7) triumph.

"I absolutely loved our response today afte rlosing a close doubles point," said UND head coach Tom Boysen. "We played intelligent, purposeful and high-level tennis in the first 45 minutes of the singles matches, and it allowed us to instantly reclaim the momentum and establish ourselves in the match."

Despite the loss in doubles action, North Dakota was unfazed, as the hosts dominated in singles play to grab the victory. Galliano made quick work on the third position by a 6-1, 6-2 score to bring the match level before Leandro Zgraggen gave the Hawks the lead for good at the top spot with a 6-1, 6-3 win.

Yasin put together one of his most complete performances of the season after moving up to the No. 5 court, extending the lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph while Terry provided the clinch moving up to the fourth position by a pair of 6-4 scores to make it 4-1 NoDak.

"Leandro, Kevin, Leo and Jerall all did a terrific job expanding leads in their first sets," said Boysen. "They allowed us to put some quick sets and matches on the board. Ethan has become someone we can trust at the end of these big matches."

Ange-Kevin Koua added the final point of the day for UND in three sets, notching a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory on the No. 2 court to close out the 5-2 match win.

"We are very happy to have one more home match next weekend in Grand Forks before the conference tournament, and we are so excited to be playing for a Summit League regular season title."

North Dakota will close the regular season and aim for a conference title next Sunday at 10:15 a.m. against Denver.
