Hawks Battle, Fall to Temple in Three Sets

North Dakota will head to Morgantown, W. Va. on Thursday for the West Virginia Invitational from Sept. 4 – Sept 6.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The UND volleyball team fell to the Temple Owls (25-13, 25-21, 25-21) in three sets on Sunday at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The Hawks fall to 0-2, while Temple improves to 1-2.

The match featured 19 ties and 12 lead changes across three sets, as the Hawks were led offensively by Paige Barber (11) and Lauren Perugini (9) who combined for 20 of the teams 30 kills (66.7 percent) on the afternoon.

Defensively, Izzie McCormick totaled a game high nine digs, along with eight from Perugini, six from Skylar Darr and five from Sadie White.

Set one showcased one tie, as the Hawks fell behind 6-2 early, but scored four consecutive points off a Temple attack error, a service ace from McCormick and two kills from Matthea Dalton to tie the match at 6-6. UND stayed within striking distance, only trailing 11-9 and 13-10 in the set, but the Owls used a 12-3 run to end the frame to take set one 25-13.

Set two was back and forth, headlined by 10 ties and seven lead changes. North Dakota led by as many as four points, owning a 5-1 advantage early thanks to back-to-back service aces from Darr.

The Hawks continued to be up in the set, leading 9-7 when the Owls used a 4-0 burst to go up 11-9. UND answered with three consecutive points, to go ahead 12-11. The two teams exchanged blows, as Temple led 19-17, before UND scored three consecutive points to go up 20-19. Temple closed the frame on a 6-1 run to take set two 25-21.

Set three was another battle, with eight ties and five lead changes. North Dakota led by as many as one, holding 1-0, 3-2 and 11-10 advantages. The Hawks trailed 20-19, but the Owls used a 5-2 run to close the set and match, winning the frame 25-21.

UND will be back in action on Thursday, as the Hawks take on West Virginia in the West Virginia Invitational at 5 p.m.
