Late goal dooms Fighting Hawks in 2-1 defeat

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision against UC Santa Barbara on Thursday morning from Bronson Field in Grand Forks, N.D.

On a cold and rainy day, the Fighting Hawks (5-2-0) carried a 1-0 lead into the halftime break following a goal from Alisha Maake in the 17th minute, but the Gauchos (4-1-1) evened the contest early in the second half before grabbing the lead on a penalty kick in the 84th minute to hand the hosts their second straight loss.

Maake struck for the lone goal in the contests for the hosts, potting her second off the season off a set piece. Paula Moreno Diaz curled a free kick perfectly onto the feet of Maake who one-touched it into the back of the net to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.

UCSB pushed hard for the equalizer as the first half wore on, as the visitors finished the opening 45 minutes with a 13-1 shot advantage. The Fighting Hawks did a good job limiting high-danger chances, however, holding the Gauchos to just one shot on target in the first half to carry the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

The Gauchos brought the match level in the 53rd minute and nearly took the lead moments later, but Grace Miller made a trio of sparkling saves to keep the game knotted at 1-1. With under seven minutes to play in the contest, the visitors won a penalty kick following a foul in the box and Olivia Howard converted the PK to give UCSB a 2-1 lead.

UND pushed hard for the equalizer and nearly found it in the final two minutes, as Amelia Loeffler fired a shot off the top of the crossbar, but UCSB held on for the 2-1 win.

North Dakota will hit the road to Ames, Iowa to battle Iowa State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
