COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Phillippe Blais-Savoie struck 1:47 into overtime to give Colorado College a 3-2 win over No. 4 North Dakota on Friday night from Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
UND (16-5-3, 8-3-0 NCHC) sees its winning streak come to an end at eight but earned a big point in the league standings to move two points ahead of second place Denver through 11 conference games.
Trailing entering the third period for only the fourth time this season, the Fighting Hawks rallied late to send the game into overtime when
Ben Strinden crashed the crease and tallied his team-leading 13th goal of the season with just 2:09 to play.
NoDak earned a power play in the dying moments of regulation but could not cash in to finish the night 0-for-3 on the man advantage. With no whistle happening after the power play, the overtime continued at 4-on-4 and allowed Blais-Savoie to fire a shot from distance that deflected off a UND defender and into the back of the net to give CC (9-9-3, 3-5-3 NCHC) the victory.
Ellis Rickwood continued his hot play as of late, striking for the game's opening goal in the first period to give the senior 11 points (3G, 8A) over his last six games with his fourth tally of the season.
Jan Špunar finished with 23 saves on 26 shots against and saw his unbeaten streak end at 10 straight starts to begin his career.
UND jumped out to an early lead, as Rickwood finished off a nice rush to the net from
Will Zellers and
Mac Swanson to put the visitors in front, 1-0, just over six minutes into the contest.
Right after the Hawks had a 2-on-1 chance early in the second period to extend the lead to 2-0, CC knotted the game at 1-1 when Drew Montgomery whistled a shot off the post and in to bring the Tigers level just 93 seconds into the stanza.
UND kept up the pressure and looked to have taken the lead after an extended shift in the offensive zone, as
Jake Livanavage blasted a puck from the high slot that hit the crossbar, bounced on the goal line and stayed out to keep the game tied. Moments later, CC took the lead for the first time on a rebound goal in front to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes.
The Hawks pushed hard for the equalizer and eventually brought the game level with the goaltender pulled.
Cade Littler made a power move to the net and created chaos in the crease before Strinden eventually swatted home the puck to tie the game at 2-2 and send the game into overtime.
Blais-Savoie earned the extra point for the Tigers with the overtime winner just under two minutes into the extra session to snap UND's winning streak at eight.
North Dakota will look to earn a potential series win with a regulation victory on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. (CT) on NCHC.tv and the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
