Soccer Drops Sunday Matchup Against Oral Roberts

TULSA, Okla. – North Dakota's women's soccer fell to the top-ranked team in the Summit League, Oral Roberts, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Tulsa, Okla.

Despite giving up a goal, The Fighting Hawks' (6-7-2, 2-4-1 Summit League) backline frustrated the Golden Eagles (11-1-4, 5-0-2 Summit League) all match. Oral Roberts' lone shot on goal in a non-penalty kick situation came in the 78th minute, which goalkeeper Thale Ruether was able to swipe away.

The Fighting Hawks had four shot attempts, led by junior winger Viktoria Filsner who had two of those attempts, including the only one on goal for the Hawks.

The Golden Eagles were the aggressors in the first half, notching four shots through the first 25 minutes. Oral Roberts' Brianna Castleberry scored the only goal of the match for the Golden Eagles with a penalty kick goal in the 10th minute. However, that would be the only shot on goal Oral Roberts secured through the first 45 minutes.

The Fighting Hawks had two shots with one at the net in the first half by way of Charlie Basinet and Filsner. Oral Roberts held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks entering the first half break.

The Golden Eagles opened the second half by immediately forcing two corner kicks back-to-back, utilizing a short kick approach to set up an open net, but Emily Archuleta thwarted the second attempt after the first went awry. Despite the continued aggression from the Golden Eagles, the Fighting Hawks secured the first two shot attempts of the half to match the team's shot totals.

That momentum stalled near the end of the match when the Golden Eagles doubled their shot count to eight with less than 10 minutes to play. Prior, UND allowed its first shot on goal from the playing field in the 78th minute.

Oral Roberts maintained the aggression and were looking to add to their lead in the final moments of the match. Three of the second half shots from Oral Roberts came in the final 10 minutes, but each were offline thanks to UND's stout defense.

Despite a couple free and goalie kicks for the Hawks, none of it amounted to shots as the final buzzer sounded with the Golden Eagles on top, 1-0.

Up next, UND caps its road trip in Fargo as it faces in-state rival North Dakota State for the team's second bout of the season on Thursday, Oct. 24. First kick is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
