No. 3 UND rallies again for 4-3 overtime win, series sweep over No. 20 Miami

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Abram Wiebe scored 1:35 into the overtime session to help No. 3 North Dakota rally to defeat No. 20 Miami, 4-3, and secure a series sweep on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 11,651 at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.

UND (23-7-0, 15-5-0 NCHC) rallied from a multi-goal deficit in the third period once again, as the hosts battled back from 3-1 down with goals from Mac Swanson (6) and Jake Livanavage (5) before Wiebe (4) scored his first-career overtime winner to secure a five-point weekend in the league standings and the 12th straight win over Miami (17-11-2, 8-10-2 NCHC).

Wiebe tallied a goal and added an assist to notch his second multi-point contest in his last three games and has seven points (1G, 6A) over his last six games. Dylan James also recorded multiple points with a pair of assists to give the senior 14 points (9G, 5A) over his last 11 contests.

Graduate student netminder Gibson Homer picked up the win in relief for UND, as he finished with three saves over the final 21 minutes of action to improve to 8-4-0 this season.

NoDak jumped out in front in the opening period, as EJ Emery walked down from the blueline and sniped home his third goal of the season to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead and a 16-5 shot advantage after 20 minutes.

It was not a good period over the next 20 for the home side, however, as Miami erupted for a trio of goals to build a 3-1 lead and silence the raucous Ralph crowd.

UND did start to get the momentum back right after the third Miami goal, with the Fighting Hawks pinning the visitors in for over two and a half minutes, but could not find the back of the net and headed to the locker room trailing by two.

The comeback started early in the third, as Wiebe made a beautiful pass to Swanson and the sophomore blasted home his sixth of the season just 29 seconds in the final stanza to quickly cut the deficit to 3-2. UND pushed hard as the period wore on and eventually earned a power play with just over three minutes to play in regulation.

With the goaltender pulled, UND struck with the extra attacker again. Livanavage settled a loose puck down at the top of the circle and wired home his fifth of the season to pull the game level at 3-3 and earn a massive point for the Fighting Hawks.

After nearly winning it in regulation, NoDak ended it quickly in the extra session. Wiebe made a move around two defenders in the neutral zone before cutting to the middle and chipping the puck over the goaltender's shoulder to secure the victory and the series sweep.

North Dakota will remain home to battle St. Cloud State in its final home series of the regular season beginning on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. on Midco Sports, NCHC.tv and the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
