Fighting Hawks Drop Pair of Games in San Diego

UND will be back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m. against Fordham.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The North Dakota softball team dropped two games on Saturday in the Campbell/Cartier Classic from SDSU Softball Stadium. North Dakota lost to Baylor by a 2-0 margin in the first game, before losing 8-0 to Oregon State in five innings in the night cap.

Game 1 – Baylor 2, UND 0
North Dakota outhit Baylor 7-to-3 in the game, with five different players recording hits. Jaedyn Valdez and Brooklyn Morris each slapped two hits, with one each from Hailey Bethune, Makenna Alexander and Quincie Chunestudey. UND left eight runners on base in the contest.

Tegan Livesay lowered her ERA to 2.88 on the season and threw her third complete game in her third appearance this season. She gave up just three hits, allowing two runs, while striking out one and walking two, across 6.0 innings.

How It Happened
Following leaving Valdez on base in the top of the 1st after a one-out double, Livesay gave up a two-out home run to Karynton Dawson, putting Baylor up 1-0.

UND had runners at the corners with two outs in the top of the 2nd following singles from Bethune and Morris, but they were stranded. There were no hits after that by either team until the 4th inning.

NoDak had one hit in the 4th and Livesay sat down the Bears 1-2-3 in the bottom half, leaving the score at 1-0. Baylor was able to add an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI single, putting the Bears up 2-0.

North Dakota had one more hit the rest of the game in the top of the 7th, falling to Baylor by a score of 2-0. Livesay threw just 83 pitches, forcing 12 groundouts.

Game 2 – Oregon State 8, UND 0 (5 Inn.)
NoDak tallied just two hits in the second game, by Taya Hopfauf and Makenna Alexander. Aleksia Severson and Alaina Foreman each manufactured walks, as the Hawks had a total of four runners left on base.

Unity Nelson went 3.1 innings, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs, while striking out one. Tehya Armstrong came in for the final .2 innings, striking out one and not allowing a base runner.

How It Happened
The Fighting Hawks first hit did not come until the 5th inning, as Oregon State scored two runs in the bottom of the 2nd, off two hits, to take a 2-0 lead over North Dakota. The Beavers proceeded to tack on three more runs in the bottom of the 3rd, to go up 5-0.

In the 4th inning the Beavers blew things open, with Tristian Thompson hitting a three-run home run off Nelson with zero outs, to make it 8-0 Oregon State.

In the top of the 5th, UND had a chance to avoid the run-rule by scoring one run. The team got its first hit when Hopfauf had a lead-off single. Bethune then flied out, which was followed by an Alexander infield single, putting runners on first and second with one out. Morris lined out, before Foreman walked, loading the bases for Severson, who grounded out to first base.

NoDak fell 8-0 in five innings. The Fighting Hawks will be back in action tomorrow for the tournament finale against Fordham at 12 p.m.
