BROOKINGS, S.D. – The North Dakota men's basketball team fell to South Dakota State on Saturday afternoon from First Bank & Trust Arena by a score of 91-83. UND drops to 16-15 overall and 10-5 in Summit League play, while SDSU improves to 13-16 and 6-8 in conference play.
With the score tied at 83-83 with 1:53 remaining, the Jackrabbits closed the game on an 8-0 run to steal the win. North Dakota was up by as many as 11 in the first half, leading for 31:05 of the contest overall.
The Green and White had three players score in double figures, paced by
Greyson Uelmen with 19 points.
Garrett Anderson totaled 18 points on 7-of-11 from the field and 4-for-8 from three, while
Eli King recorded 14 points on 5-for-9 from the field and 4-of-7 from deep.
The Hawks connected on 13-of-31 three-point attempts and dished out 17 assists, both season bests in Summit League play. Anthony Smith lll had a career-high eight dimes.
Overall UND shot 31-for-60 from the floor, while SDSU was 28-for-59 and from the field and 14-of-29 from deep. The Jackrabbits dominated on the glass, outrebounding UND, 40-25 and 14-6 on the offensive boards. SDSU totaled 18 second chance points, compared to just five from North Dakota.
First Half
UND came out scorching hot from the field, connecting on its first 13-of-18 shots from the field, to put go up 34-25 with 8:13 left in the first half. North Dakota began 6-of-10 from deep, courtesy of three 3-pointers from Anderson, two from King and one from
Marley Curtis.
UND would lead by as many as 11, up 38-27 with 5:24 remaining. The Jackrabbits outscored NoDak 15-6 from then until halftime, giving the Fighting Hawks a 44-42 lead at the break. Anderson (11), King (8) and Uelmen (8) combined for 27 of the squads 44 first half points.
Second Half
Out of the break, SDSU recorded its first lead since early in the first half, going up 52-51 with 16:37 left. NoDak responded with a 6-0 run, started by Uelmen who converted on a three-point play immediately after the Jackrabbits gained the lead. UND held a 57-52 advantage with 15:20 to play.
NoDak would push the lead to seven on multiple occasions, last owning a 70-63 lead when
Zach Kraft hit a corner three with 9:45 to play. SDSU answered with a 7-0 run, to tie the game up at 70-70 at the 7:52 mark.
The Hawks held strong, as Smith lll converted an and-1 at the rim, to put North Dakota back in front, 73-70. Following two Joe Sayler free throws for SDSU, King knocked down a three-pointer, putting NoDak up 76-72 with 6:51 to play.
Following a Sayler three and a Hawks turnover, SDSU had a chance to take the lead. Sayler drove in and attempted a turnaround mid-range jump shot, but was swatted from behind by King, in which Uelmen grabbed the defensive rebound and pushed ahead for the fastbreak layup. North Dakota led 78-75 with 5:39 remaining.
The Jackrabbits scored four-straight points to go up 79-78, when the Hawks answered again, via a King right-wing three-pointer. North Dakota led 81-79 with 4:26 to play.
That was the last lead the Fighting Hawks owned, as SDSU scored four-straight points to go up 83-81. Anderson converted on a layup to respond, tying the score at 83-83 with just 1:53 left.
Kalen Garry from the Jackrabbits hit a three-pointer on the next possession, putting them back in front at 86-83 with 1:27 to play.
UND was unable to answer for the first time all game, as Kraft missed a corner-three, resulting in a held back situation, giving SDSU the ball. On defense, the Hawks fouled Matthew Mors, where he converted two free throws, making it an 88-83 game with 36 seconds to play.
NoDak fought off many SDSU runs, but was unable to fight off the last one, dropping to the Jackrabbits, 91-83.
North Dakota will be back in action next Saturday for the regular season finale against North Dakota State in Fargo. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
