GRAND FORKS, N.D. – For the third straight week, junior defenseman
Abram Wiebe was named NCHC Defenseman of the Week by the league office on Tuesday morning following a strong pair of games against St. Cloud State.
Wiebe becomes only the second defenseman to earn three straight weekly honors in NCHC history – joining Denver's Joey LaLeggia in 2014-15.
The Mission, British Columbia, native was dominant on both ends of the ice once again in an unbeaten weekend against St. Cloud State, as he scored a goal and dished out three assists for four points.
In Friday's 4-4 tie, Wiebe notched a pair of assists on both goals from
Will Zellers to help UND rally from a multi-goal deficit in the third period and earn a big point in the NCHC standings. The next night, Wiebe scored NoDak's first goal of the game to even the score at 1-1 before capping off a three-goal first with a primary assist on
Ollie Josephson's power play tally to help the Fighting Hawks skate to a 6-4 victory.
On the defensive side, Wiebe finished the weekend with a plus-5 rating and was not on the ice for a goal against while also blocking a trio of shots.
Wiebe has 10 points (2G, 8A) during the month of February to lead all NCHC blueliners and now leads UND defensemen with 25 points this season.
No. 3 North Dakota will close out the regular season and look to capture its seventh Penrose Cup at No. 4 Western Michigan beginning Friday night at 6:00 p.m. (CT) on NCHC.tv and the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
