GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota women's tennis put on a dominant showing from start to finish on Sunday afternoon as the Fighting Hawks defeated Minnesota Crookston, 7-0, inside Choice Health & Fitness.
Doubles action cruised by in favor of UND, beginning with a stifling 6-0 win for
Alyssa Giupponi and
Andrea Pineda at the middle position.
Simone Cameron and
Emma Roberts followed that up with a similar 6-0 showing from the No. 3 court to clinch the doubles point, but the action was not done yet.
Jule Schulte and
Linn Svaerd teamed up to collect a 6-1 win from the top position to sweep double play and put the Hawks ahead 1-0.
The momentum carried over in similar fashion to one-on-one action as North Dakota won all six singles matches in straight sets. Svaerd made quick work of her match at the No. 6 position with a 6-0, 6-0 win before Roberts joined her with a 6-1, 6-1 win of her own.
It was Giupponi from the No. 3 court that clinched the match for the Fighting Hawks after she put on a 6-1, 6-0 showing for the 4-0 UND lead. Schulte added in a 6-2, 6-0 win from the top spot and Cameron cruised her way to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 court.
The final points on the day for North Dakota came from the No. 2 spot, where Pineda won her match 6-0, 6-3 to secure the sweep and the 7-0 win.
"We player smart, aggressive tennis for the most part today, both in doubles and singles," said head coach
Tom Boysen. "We capitalized on short balls and took advantage of our offensive skills.
"This was a great 2-0 weekend for the team and we are excited to not only start our conference season next Saturday, but also to leave on our spring break trip to Tulsa and New Orleans."
North Dakota women's tennis returns to the road for its first conference match of the season, facing Oral Roberts on Friday, March 6 before heading to face Northeastern State on Sunday, March 8.
