Three Fighting Hawks Earn Academic All-League Honors

| By:
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – In recognition of outstanding performances both during the indoor track and field season and in the classroom, three Fighting Hawks have been named to the Indoor Track and Field Academic All-Summit League Team, league officials announced on Wednesday.

Jadyn Keeler headlined the recognitions for North Dakota with her third career academic accolade. It marks the latest honor for the senior this season, who recently became a two-time Second Team All-America honoree at the NCAA Indoor Championships after taking 12th place in the women's 5000-meter run in a time of 15:40.81.

The Barrie, Ontario-native entered the national championships ranked 15th after running her qualifying time of 15:14.76 earlier this season at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener out in Boston. That time broke the UND school record and marked her first of three shattered records this season. She also made history in the mile rule (4:39.06) and the 3000-meter run (8:50.45), which became the first sub-9 time in the history of North Dakota collegiate athletics.

Keeler also collected a second consecutive triple crown during competition at the Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships, repeating as a gold medalist in the mile run (4:39.69), 3000-meter run (9:19.62) and 5000-meter run (15:56.90) to secure another trio of All-Summit League performances. She carries a GPA of 3.97 and majors in Molecular and Integrative Biology.

Lucas Schweigert scored for the Fighting Hawks in two key meets during the indoor season while serving a key role in the men's throwing events. But it was his academic success that helped him secure the title of Men's Indoor Track and Field Scholar of the Championship. The senior currently holds a perfect 4.0 grade point average while pursuing a Biology degree.

Shane Zierden qualified for the long jump finals at the conference championship meet and went on to finish sixth overall in the event. He tallied four top-five finishes during the season, including an event win in the long jump at the UND Tune-Up. Zierden is pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering and holds a GPA of 4.0.

To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team's competitions.

Nominations are brought forth by sports information directors from the league's eight institutions that carry track and field, and voting is conducted by both the SIDs and facility athletic representatives (FARs). Each team is made up of the 15 student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.

North Dakota track and field returns to outdoor competition this weekend at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, Stanford Invitational and Triton Invitational.
