North Dakota Drops Match Against Denver

DENVER, Colo. – In the final road contest of the conference regular season, North Dakota women's tennis fell to Denver, 6-1, in Saturday afternoon competition

The loss moves the Fighting Hawks to 12-9 overall this season with a 3-2 conference showing as the Pioneers improve to 13-7 and 5-0.

Doubles play began in favor of the home team after Denver collected a pair of 6-3 wins against the duos of Alyssa Giupponi and Emma Roberts on the No. 3 court and Alva Norberg and Andrea Pineda at the No. 2 court. Though the initial 1-0 lead was already clinched, Ethel Li and Jule Schulte put on a show at the top spot and took home a 6-4 win.

Denver carried that momentum into singles play, winning five of the six one-on-one contests on the top five courts. The Pioneers took a 6-1, 6-0 win from the top spot and soon added in a tight 6-2, 7-5 win from the No. 2 position. A 6-2, 6-1 win followed for the home team at the third court while Norberg's fight came up short in a 6-4, 6-4 match from the No. 4 spot and a 6-1, 6-1 match went in Denver's favor at the No. 5 court.

North Dakota lone win came from the No. 6 court off the racket of Roberts. The freshman Fighting Hawk took control early and fended off a threatening late rally from her Pioneer opponent to clinch a 6-2, 6-4 win, solidifying the 6-1 final score. It marks Roberts' third-straight singles win and improves her individual record to 12-5 so far this season.

North Dakota women's tennis will return to Choice Health & Fitness for the final match of the regular season against St. Thomas on Saturday, April 18. Competition is set to start at 12:30 p.m. and will feature Senior Day celebrations.
