GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Despite an early lead off a stellar goal from North Dakota's own
Hunter Borgel, the Fighting Hawks dropped its Sunday afternoon matinee in all-out physical fashion against Green Bay, 2-1, at Bronson Field.
The visiting Phoenix seemed to be in the driver's seat during the first half as they tallied seven shots and four corner kicks through the first 45 minutes while holding the home team to zeroes in each of those respective categories. But the continually gritty defensive play from both teams kept the match scoreless all-around as
Thale Ruether collected four saves.
It took nearly 50 full minutes for any scoring to occur from either end, but the first netted shot was in favor of North Dakota. Following a review from the officials, Borgel's header in the 50
th minute was confirmed, putting the Fighting Hawks ahead 1-0 at the 49:50 timestamp.
The second half featured more of the all-out defensive battle previewed in the first half as the Fighting Hawks and Phoenix clashed on the pitch. 12 total fouls were called in the second 45 minutes alongside four of the day's five yellow cards.
Nearly 15 minutes—and two yellow cards—later, Green Bay struck back. The Phoenix found the back of the net in the 65
th minute to tie things up before doing it again 16 minutes later. A scored goal from the visitors gave Green Bay the 2-1 advantage at the 80:48 mark, forcing a score that soon became the final.
Ruether spent all 90 minutes in the game as UND's goalkeeper, totaling five saves in the afternoon affair, while Borgel and
Addison Stadden split to share the team's two total shots and shots-on-goal.
North Dakota will hit the road to take on Eastern Michigan on Saturday, August 22 at 10:30 a.m. CT.
