GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota soccer team defeated Florida Atlantic, 2-0, on a sunny afternoon at Bronson Field. With the win, the Fighting Hawks improve to 3-3-1 on the season.
It was a tight battle through the first half, with neither team finding the back of the net before halftime. UND controlled much of the opening 45 minutes, recording eight shots, including two on goal. The trio of
Hannah Peters,
Lillian Bashaw and
Addison Stadden played the entire first half and helped hold FAU to just one shot, despite the Owls earning seven corner kicks.
The Hawks had a chance to break the deadlock in the final minutes of the half when
Cora Ellermann fired a shot from near the center of the box, but the FAU goalkeeper made the save.
North Dakota carried the same energy into the second half and quickly found its breakthrough. The Fighting Hawks scored twice in less than two minutes before the 51st minute.
Ellermann was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled by an FAU defender inside the box. The senior calmly placed her shot past the goalkeeper's right side to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage at the 49:17 mark. The goal marked Ellermann's first of the season and her sixth as a Fighting Hawk.
Following the goal, North Dakota quickly regained possession and pushed toward the FAU net. As the ball bounced around in front of the goal,
Hunter Borgel got a foot on it and found the back of the net to extend the UND lead to 2-0 at 50:48. The goal marked Borgel's third of the season and third of her career.
North Dakota's defense held strong the rest of the way as Florida Atlantic attempted to mount a comeback. The Owls recorded three second-half shots, but none were on goal.
Five Fighting Hawks played all 90 minutes, including UND's three defenders and goalkeeper
Thale Ruether. With the shutout victory, Ruether recorded her first shutout as a Fighting Hawk.
The Fighting Hawks return to Bronson Field on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 3 p.m. for a recently scheduled matchup against North Dakota State College of Science.
POSTGAME NOTES
- North Dakota now leads the all-time series against Florida Atlantic, 1-0-0.
- FAU held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-4.
- The Fighting Hawks are now 2-2 on penalty kicks this season. Avery Toms scored UND's other penalty kick at UC Santa Barbara last weekend.
- UND led in shots, 16-4, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.
- Ellermann led the Hawks in shots with five and shots on goal with three.
- Jojo Muelhaupt recorded her first collegiate shot against the Owls.
- With the win, Ruether improves to 3-2-1 in goal.
