BROOKINGS, S.D. – The University of North Dakota fell, 2-1, to South Dakota State Sunday afternoon to close the opening weekend of Summit League play. The Fighting Hawks move to 5-4-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
The match was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. in Brookings but was pushed back to 3 p.m. to allow the grass field at Fishback Soccer Park additional time to dry. Despite the delay, both teams battled through muddy conditions throughout the match.
The Hawks struck first, finding the back of the net 13:13 into the match.
Charlie Basinet won possession from the Jackrabbits just past midfield and sent the ball forward toward
Hunter Borgel. Borgel sprinted past two SDSU defenders to gain possession before taking the ball around the Jackrabbits goalkeeper and finding the bottom-right corner of the net.
Each team recorded five shots in the opening 45 minutes, with UND taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.
South Dakota State came out of the break with increased pressure, putting the Hawks' defense to the test. The Jackrabbits found the equalizer within the first 15 minutes of the second half before being awarded a penalty kick with less than 10 minutes remaining. UND goalkeeper
Thale Ruether made the initial save on the penalty kick, but SDSU converted the ensuing rebound to take a 2-1 lead.
The Hawks were limited to two shots in the second half, while the Jackrabbits recorded 14.
The Fighting Hawks return to action Sunday, Oct. 4, when they host South Dakota at Bronson Field. The match will help cap UND's Homecoming celebrations, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.

- North Dakota trials the all-time series, 3-16-2.
- Thale Ruether has faced two penalty kicks this season, saving one against UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 3 and allowing one against South Dakota State.
- Defensive duo Lillian Brashaw and Addison Stadden played all 90 minutes for the Hawks.
- Hunter Borgel and Jojo Muelhaupt led UND with two shots apiece.
- UND recorded four corner kicks, with two coming in each half.
