Second Half Comeback Forces 2-2 Result Against Gauchos

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – It was a tale of two halves for North Dakota in the Thursday night soccer match against UC Santa Barbara as the Fighting Hawks fended off a cold first 45 minutes and capitalized off Thale Ruether's strong showing at goalkeeper to force a 2-2 final score at Harder Stadium.
 
The result gives UND a 2-2-1 record so far this season as the Gauchos move to 3-1-2 and the all-time series now sits at 0-1-1 in favor of UCSB.
 
First half action seemed to have the home team firmly in the driver's seat as UCSB rattled off eight shots in the first eight minutes. Despite two early saves from Ruether, the Gauchos soon took the lead at 1-0 after scoring in the 22nd minute. North Dakota was unable to get a shot off in those first 45 minutes while UC Santa Barbara attempted 16 total shots to hold onto the lead at halftime.
 
But the Fighting Hawks were not to be deterred.
 
Charlie Basinet netted the equalizer for UND off the corner kick—with assists from Felicitas Uhlig and Hannah Peters—in the 52nd minute to make things even at 1-1. Seven minutes later, video review following a coach's challenge awarded North Dakota with a penalty kick. It was Avery Toms who stepped up for UND, and it was the senior who drilled the kick to take the 2-1 lead in the 59th minute.
 
UC Santa Barbara once again tied the score at 2-2 with a goal of its own at the 63:20 mark before being awarded a penalty kick of its own in the 90th minute of action. But Ruether's night was not quite done yet. The sophomore from Dorfmark, Lower Saxony, Germany was all that stood between the Gauchos and possible victory, but yet another stellar save from the UND goalie all but sealed the 2-2 result.
 
Basinet and Toms combined for the two goals on the night as Uhlig and Peters tallied the two team assists. Though North Dakota was held to only five total shots on the night, the Fighting Hawks remained efficient by sending four shots on goal compared to the Gauchos' 33 total shots with 14 on-goal.
 
At goalie, Ruether had herself a night as she tallied 12 saves to double her season total. Five of those came from the first half while the final seven—and the game-sealing save—came in the back 45 minutes.  
 
The California road trip concludes for North Dakota as the Fighting Hawks will face UC Riverside on Sunday afternoon in the latter half of the two-game road slate with a Noon CT match at UCR Soccer Stadium.
